Exclusive: Adidas to End Copa Mundial Boots?

Adidas will probably discontinue the iconic classic Copa Mundial football boots, which we can exclusively reveal.

We have no ultimate confirmation that the Copa Mundial will be history from summer 2023 yet

As of today, we have no 100% confirmation that Adidas will discontinue the Copa Mundial football boot range. Much info we got that the Three Stripes will stop the iconic silo, however.

The Adidas Copa Mundial (Spanish for World Cup) football boot was released in 1979. They were designed for the 1982 FIFA World Cup held in Spain but have stayed since then.

Adidas Copa Mundial to Be Replaced By Copa Icon/Mundial.1 From Summer 2023

The Adidas Copa Mundial is set to be replaced by the brand-new Adidas Copa Icon, also called "Mundial.1".

The Copa Icon is the (much-need successor of the Copa Mundial

Indeed, when comparing the Adidas Copa Icon with the Copa Mundial, it becomes obvious that the 2022 Copa Icon takes many elements of the Copa Mundial "1982".

Adidas will also release a black, white, and gold colorway of the Copa Icon that is almost identical to the classic black/white Copa Mundial. It is worn by a few referees in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

To our information, the Adidas Copa Mundial will be discontinued in summer 2023, ahead of the start of the 2023-2024 season.

The Copa Mundial is almost sold out on Adidas' website

Interestingly, when looking to buy the Adidas Copa Mundial on Adidas' official website, most sizes are already sold out...

Reasons For the End of the Adidas Copa Mundial

  • No high-end football boot anymore
  • Bad profitability

But why do Adidas stop the Copa Mundial. There are two main reasons - performance, and profitability.

Performance: According to football boots tester Bryan Byrne of SoccerCleats101, "the Adidas Copa Mundial is a thing of the past, a dinosaur of the boot world. Heavy, clunky and they don’t offer performance that compares to modern releases!".

No well-known footballer has been wearing the Copa Mundial for years - they are surely ot a secret top-level boot anymore.

Bad Profitability: The Copa Mundial is made in Germany, features Kangaroo leather, and retails at just 160 USD. This makes them much less expensive than modern high-end boots (even though they are practically never on sale). We think they are more expensive to produce than modern high-end soccer boots.
