18 February 2023: Exclusive: Genoa to Leave Castore Due to Severe Problems?

There have been problems from the very start of Genoa's time with Castore and the Serie B club are allegedly considering a return to previous sponsor, Kappa.

Genoa's Problems with Castore - Return to Kappa Next Season?

Italian Serie B side Genoa were one of several clubs signed by Castore as part of their European expansion last summer and they have encountered numerous problems with the brand in their short time working together. Footy Headlines has been informed that the club have communicated internally that there will be a return to Kappa next season. We cannot yet verify this information, but we can explain Genoa's grievances with the Castore.

Genoa wore Kappa gear for most of their pre-season campaign.

Since the beginning, it has not been smooth sailing. The club did not receive any clothing from Castore for their pre-season preparation so they continued to train and play in Kappa gear until the beginning of August. They received their new home kits just in time for their first competitive game of the season on August 8th.

The delayed deliveries did not end there. Genoa's first team had to wait until December before their warm winter jackets arrived, while some of their youth teams did not receive these garments until January. In the meantime, they were forced to use last season's Kappa jackets.

Genoa's fans have been frustrated by similar supply issues. They have been able to buy match kits sand some basic training wear from the club shop, but they are unimpressed by the limited options available to them. Polo shirts, hoodies, rain jackets and accessories such as hats and gloves are absent from the store, while the club's online shop was temporarily removed from the website without warning.

None of the training tops or jackets pictured above are available from the club's online shop.

The online shop has since returned, so site maintenance is the likeliest explanation, but it still contains much less stock than those of other Castore sponsored teams. Fans have also noticed that Castore regularly share posts on social media from the teams they sponsor following good results, but that Genoa are never among these posts, despite currently being placed second in Serie B.

The Future

We cannot confirm if Genoa have already made the decision to ditch Castore, although there is talk of this prospect around the club and the city of Genova. Castore are focused on growing their brand and signing more and more football teams. It would create very bad publicity for them if Genoa were to cancel their deal because of the various problems they encountered. We expect Castore to try to repair the relationship with Genoa in order to protect their brand image and reputation, especially when there are already question marks over the quality of their products. Whether Genoa can be convinced to stick with them is another question.
