Another Loss for Nike - Alessandro Bastoni Joins Puma

Inter and Italy defender Alessandro Bastoni has joined Puma, having previously been contracted to Nike. This continues the trend we have seen over the past couple of years of players leaving Nike.

Bastoni Signs with Puma

Bastoni will wear boots from Puma's Future silo.

Alessandro Bastoni, 22, has already played 111 games for the Nerazzuri and was part of the winning Euro 2020 squad who beat England in the final at Wembley last summer. He had worn Nike Mercurials for all of his career until announcing his switch to Puma a few days ago.

He had been training in blackout Puma boots as far back as September 2021, but continued to wear Nike Mercurials in matches. This suggests that the Puma deal had been in the works for a while and he was getting used to the feel of their boots so he'd be comfortable making the switch when his Nike contract ran out.

Puma and Nike have adopted opposing strategies when it comes to boot deals recently. Nike have been letting players' contracts lapse without renewing them, while Puma have been signing up as many players as possible. Bastoni isn't the first player to abandon the Swoosh for Puma and he probably won't be the last.
