Kimmich Takes Over Thiago's Number 6 at Bayern - Confirmed Just 2 Hours Before Start of Season
Just as Thiago's transfer to Liverpool was confirmed, FC Bayern announced that Joshua Kimmich will take over the Spaniard's number six. The chang was leaked a few hours before.
Kimmich already wore his new shirt number during the 2020-21 Bundesliga opener against Schalke, which Bayern won 8-0. Kimmich also took over Thiago's position in the defensive midield as Pavard slotted in at right back after recovering from injury.
The change follows a Bayern's new numbering strategy, which already saw Gnabry switch to number 7, which had been free since Franck Ribery's departure a year before, earlier this summer.
Previously at Bayern, players did not change numbers at all - this meant that players that came through the academy or joined young often wore unusually high numbers throughout their stay with the club. Examples include Alaba (27), Schweinsteiger (31) or Kroos (39).
