New Wolfsburg Logo Released
- New Logo: VfL Wolfsburg has officially announced the return of the historic 'Zinnenwappen' (battlement crest) as their primary logo, replacing the circular logo after 24 years.
- Collaborative Decision: The decision to reinstate the historic battlements was a collaborative effort between club management, city representatives, and fans, supported by design agencies.
- Kit Transition: While the logo change is immediate, the new logo won't appear on standard match kits until the 2027-2028 season due to production lead times, but a special edition jersey with the new crest will be released sooner.
VfL Wolfsburg has officially announced a change to their club crest, bringing back the deeply traditional "Zinnenwappen" (battlement crest). After playing under their current circular logo for the past 24 years, the German club is introducing a modernized version of the castle-inspired "W" design as their primary emblem. The transition will begin immediately, starting with the team's match against Bayern Munich.
Official: VfL Wolfsburg Announce Return of Historic 'Zinnenwappen' Logo
The decision to reinstate the historic battlements is the result of a collaborative process involving club management, city representatives, and the active fans, supported by design agencies Atelier Sasserath and Mutabor. Supporter groups have campaigned for the official return of the Zinnenwappen for over two decades, keeping it highly visible on flags and banners in the stadium stands. The returning crest serves as a symbol of identity, representing the strong historical ties between the club, the city of Wolfsburg, and the local workforce.
However, this immediate brand update will not be instantly reflected on the club's standard match kits. Because of the nearly two-year lead times required by technical sponsor Nike for kit production, the outgoing round logo will still be used on Wolfsburg's regular home, away, and third kits throughout the upcoming 2026-2027 season.
To bridge this gap and satisfy immediate fan demand, Wolfsburg and Nike have confirmed that a special edition jersey featuring the new battlement crest will be released during the upcoming campaign. The full on-pitch transition will then be completed in time for the 2027-2028 season, when the Zinnenwappen will officially take its permanent place on all regular matchwear.
In addition to the kits, the visual identity around the stadium and club facilities will be updated gradually to replace the old emblem, a process that will respect the natural product life cycle of existing items. Alongside the crest, the club is also introducing new typography and graphical elements to modernize their overall aesthetic.

Good or Bad? Rexona Armpit Sponsorship on 2026 World Cup Referee Shirts
Update - Tuesday, June 23, 2026: Following our publication, Rexona contacted us to provide additional context on the activation.
According to Ben Curtis, Global Brand Vice President for Rexona at Unilever, the sponsorship is intended to highlight fourth officials, who "may not always be the focus of attention but are at the centre of some of football's most intense and anticipated moments," as part of Rexona's "It Won't Let You Down" campaign during the FIFA World Cup 2026. "They need to remain cool and calm under pressure - That's exactly why this partnership is such a natural fit for Rexona."
The 2026 World Cup referee shirts feature one of the most amusing and strategic sponsorship placements seen in football. Deodorant brand Rexona has their logo positioned directly under the armpits of the match officials' jerseys, creating a highly contextual advertising opportunity.
The Rexona logo remains largely hidden during regular play but becomes clearly visible whenever a referee raises their arms to signal a free kick, award a penalty, or issue a card. This placement perfectly matches the deodorant product being advertised, resulting in a memorable piece of marketing on the sport's biggest stage.
While this specific placement has caught the attention of fans during the 2026 tournament, it is not entirely unprecedented. A similar concept was previously executed in Brazil, where Avanço deodorant sponsored the armpits of Corinthians. However, Rexona's execution at a World Cup brings the clever concept to a massive global audience.
