Is Newcastle United Circumventing the FA’s Rules in Order to Change Its Crest?

  • Crest Update and Fan Debate: Newcastle United's ongoing process to modernize its club badge has sparked debate among supporters regarding the limited design options presented in a new consultation poll.
  • FA Heritage Rule Circumvention Concerns: Supporters question if Newcastle is attempting to bypass FA Rule M9, which requires clear majority fan consent for material crest changes, by not offering an option to retain the existing badge.
  • Pre-consultation Crest Leak: A crest design very similar to the current options was leaked just three days after the club announced crest changes, suggesting that fan engagement was not genuinely integrated into the decision-making process.

Newcastle United's ongoing process to update its official club badge has sparked fresh debate among supporters following the distribution of a new consultation poll in August 2026. The club, which first announced plans to modernize its crest in May 2025, sent refined design options to season ticket holders and members after a series of fan workshops. However, the limited choices - featuring minor, subtle tweaks - have led some supporters to question whether Newcastle is attempting to bypass the Football Association's strict heritage rules by not offering a clear option to retain the existing badge.

FA Heritage Regulations and Consultation Concerns

Under FA Rule M9, introduced to safeguard traditional club heritage, any club seeking a material change to its crest or colors must provide clear evidence that a majority of its supporters favor the proposed changes. Supporter groups, including the Newcastle United Supporters Trust, previously raised concerns that early surveys were structured in a leading manner. The lack of an explicit choice to keep the current crest in recent polls has renewed frustration, with fans debating whether presenting only modified options satisfies the requirement for genuine majority consent.

No option to keep the current crest, and the crest was leaked just three days after Newcastle announced that they would engage fans

Indeed, a Newcastle United badge very similar to those options was already leaked on 12 May 2025, just three days after Newcastle officially announced that they wanted to change crests. This more or less confirms that fan engagement was not really there.

Do you think Newcastle's process is a fair one for fans? Comment below.
