$720 - Self-Lacing Nike HyperAdapt Trainer to Be Available From December 1

Update: The self-lacing Nike HyperAdapt shoes will be available from December 1, 2016. They will retail at a whopping $720. Learn more about the cutting-edge sneaker in our original post from March below.

At this week's Nike Innovation Summit, all eyes initially were on the big Mercurial Superfly V reveal and the all-new anti-clog tech the brand showcased there. But the event also oversaw the world premiere of Nike's first-ever mass-market 'self-lacing' shoe, and it turned to none other than Cristiano Ronaldo to show off the new Nike HyperAdapt 1.0.

Wow! Thanks @nike for letting me be the first athlete in the world to try the new HyperAdapt 1.0 #nike2016 #nikeinnovation

“Innovation at Nike is not about dreaming of tomorrow. It’s about accelerating toward it,” says Tinker Hatfield. “We’re able to anticipate the needs of athletes because we know them better than anybody. Sometimes, we deliver a reality before others have even begun to imagine it.”

Nike HyperAdapt 1.0

The new self-lacing Nike HyperAdapt 1.0 shoes were unveiled in three initial colorways.

The new Nike HyperAdapt 1.0 trainers introduce what Nike calls "adaptive lacing." “When you step in, your heel will hit a sensor and the system will automatically tighten,” explains Tiffany Beers, Senior Innovator, NIKE, Inc., and the project’s technical lead. “Then there are two buttons on the side to tighten and loosen. You can adjust it until it’s perfect.”

The potential of adaptive lacing for the athlete is huge, Hatfield adds, as it would provide tailored-to-the-moment custom fit. “It is amazing to consider a shoe that senses what the body needs in real-time. That eliminates a multitude of distractions, including mental attrition, and thus truly benefits performance.”

Set to be available in three initial paint jobs from December 1, 2016, the Nike HyperAdapt will cost approximately $720.
