It was the first time that Thiago Alcántara was spotted with his modified Nike Mercurial Vapor 360 boots. He usually is lacing up in the low-cut Nike Hypervenom Phantom III.

Thiago Alcántara's Nike Mercurial Vapor 360 soccer cleat feature a cut-off collar with only the front part of collar being not cut off. It is a quite odd look that is remarkably similar to Modric's customization.
Apart from the tongue, Thiago's Nike Mercurial Vapor 360 soccer cleats are the same as the standard edition of the speed boots.
The likely reason for Modric and Thiago to cut off all parts except part in the front center of the collar is that they prefer a low-cut boot. In fact, their construction is somehow similar to a classic boot with a traditional tongue.
