Gavi Inherits Iconic Barcelona No. 6 Kit
Update: Barcelona have just made an official announcement confirming reports that Gavi will be getting the club's number 6. The midfielder is changing his jersey number from the number 30 he was worn since the 2021-22 season.
Gavi inherits a number worn by players such as Migueli, Guillermo Amor, coach Xavi Hernández (who wore the jersey for the most seasons for the Club), or more recently Dani Alves, Denis Suárez, Todibo, Carles Aleñá, and Riqui Puig.
The shirt number has been free since the 2021-22 season when Riqui Puig left the Club.
Gavi wears the unfitting number 9 for Spain
Normally associated with a center forward, Gavi wears the number 9 for the Spanish national team, as he appeared at the recent World Cup under coach Luis Enrique at the time.
January 2023: Gavi to Inherit Barcelona No. 6 Jersey?
Barcelona starlet Pablo Gavi will inherit the club's iconic no. 6 jersey but only once La Liga have given the green light.
Gavi to Inherit Xavi's Iconic Jersey
Barca's number 6 shirt is certainly a memorable one, especially for the fans as it used to be worn by their legend and current head coach, Xavi Hernadez. After leaving Blaugrana in 2015 and eventually ending his playing career in 2019, Xavi never had his iconic jersey retired.
Several players have worn it since then but none managed to successfully replicate Xavi's brilliance. That might soon change with Gavi set to inherit it. According to Barcelona-based journalist, Helena Condis, Barca are preparing to swap their 18-year-old wonder boy's current no. 30 jersey for the no. 6.
However, the Blaugrana's plan will have to wait for La Liga's permission. Barcelona's idea was to register Gavi's newly signed contract as a first-team player. The Spanish international renewed his contract with Barca until 2026 in September last year. Unfortunately, the club still need time to register Gavi's new contract due to their financial problems.
Earlier this year, Barcelona president Joan Laporta suggest that they might need until June to resolve Gavi's contract registration. But apparently, as long as La Liga give the green light, the young midfielder could already play in the number 6 shirt this season. If everything goes to plan, Gavi might be able to debut the number 6 jersey this weekend as the Catalan outfit face Girona in La Liga. Barca fans are excited to see Gavi inheriting Xavi's jersey, believing that the La Masia graduate is the perfect player for it.
Barcelona Players Who Wore the Number 6 Since Xavi's Departure
The likes of Dani Alves, Dennis Suarez, Jean-Clair Todibo, Carles Alena, and Riqui Puig are those who have also worn the no.6 shirt after Xavi. Since debuting for Barcelona's first team back on 29 August 2021, Gavi has made 73 appearances with three goals and 11 assists in all competitions.
