Aberdeen is known as the "Granite City" because of the extensive use of locally quarried grey granite in the construction of many of its buildings. The granite from Aberdeen, especially from nearby Rubislaw Quarry, was prized for its durability, strength, and polished finish, making it a popular building material during the 18th and 19th centuries. As a result, much of Aberdeen’s architecture, including public buildings, monuments, and homes, features this distinctive stone.
