DIY Fix Possible With Steam: Nike Acknowledges Bizarre Shoulder Flaw on 2026 World Cup Kits
- Design Flaw: Nike's 2026 World Cup kits have a shoulder seam design flaw, causing a bulging or pointed shoulder appearance.
- Nike's Acknowledgment: Nike admitted the Aero-FIT authentic template has a structural issue around the shoulder seam, affecting the aesthetic.
- Possible Fix: The shoulder issue can be fixed with steam or washing.
Update - Apr 11, 2026: The Nike shoulder issue can be relatively easily fixed with a little steam, as showcased by kit account @Kitkingdom83. Be careful when using steam, and reduce the amount of time needed to the shortest possible.
Update - Apr 9, 2026: Following their on-pitch debut during the recent international break, Nike’s 2026 World Cup kits have drawn attention for an unexpected design flaw. Fans and players alike have noticed a strange, bulging shoulder seam on the brand's new authentic Aero-FIT template.
The bunching issue is highly visible across several prominent federations. Kylian Mbappé's France jersey displayed an awkward raised seam, while Uruguay's kits gave players an almost comical, pointed-shoulder silhouette. Retail versions purchased by fans suffer from the exact same structural problem, prompting heavy criticism online from buyers.
In a statement provided to The Guardian, Nike officially admitted that their highly touted Aero-FIT authentic template has a noticeable structural issue.
"During the recent international break, we observed a minor issue with our Nike national team kits, most noticeable around the shoulder seam," a Nike spokesperson stated. "Performance is unaffected, but the overall aesthetic is not where it needs to be."
The new Aero-FIT template relies on computational design and a stitch-specific knitting process, which appears to have backfired aesthetically in the shoulder construction.
With the 2026 World Cup in North America just over two months away, Nike is currently in discussions with partner federations and vendors to determine the next steps. However, due to the tight turnaround and the sheer volume of jerseys already sold globally, a full redesign or consumer replacement rollout would be a massive logistical challenge.

Mar 28, 2026: Following the first matches of the international break of the year, a very clear pattern has emerged regarding the brand-new Nike 2026 Federation kits.
A Template Built for the One Body Type Only?
The shoulder width of the new Nike template is simply too wide for many players.
As seen across multiple national teams over the past week, including France's Ousmane Dembélé and Uruguay's Maximiliano Araújo & Federico Valverde, the structured shoulder seams of the new Nike AeroFit shirts are consistently extending way past many players' natural shoulder lines.
Because the seam connecting the sleeve to the torso is heavily reinforced and sits so high up on the collarbone, it refuses to drape naturally. Instead, it creates a stiff, protruding peak that looks exactly like a poorly fitted suit jacket.
For Rashford, the shoulder width was a perfect fit.
The Verdict
This wide-shoulder phenomenon, combined with the incredibly short sleeves and gaping necklines we reported on earlier this week, makes the 2026 Nike Authentic template one of the most awkwardly proportioned elite kits in recent memory.
Have you noticed the wide "shoulder pad" effect on other players during this international break? Do you think Nike miscalculated the proportions of their new 2026 Authentic template? Let us know in the comments below.
