- Fanatics Licensing Deal: Following a new long-term licensing deal between FIFA and Fanatics, these patches will be removed after the game and placed inside trading cards.
- Early Introduction: While the Fanatics trading card deal officially starts in 2031, the patches will be used at the 2026 World Cup to stockpile match-worn material.
A totally new kit feature will debut at the 2026 World Cup. Following a new long-term licensing deal between FIFA and Fanatics, players making their first tournament appearance will wear a special "Debut Patch" on their jerseys.
Topps Takes Over Deal From 2031: New "Debut Patches" to Feature on 2026 World Cup Kits & Beyond
The system has already been widely used across American sports leagues. The concept sees a unique fabric patch applied to a player's uniform for their very first game. After the final whistle, this patch is removed and eventually placed inside a premium trading card to create a piece of match-worn memorabilia.
While the Fanatics exclusive trading card deal only officially starts in 2031, the patches will be visible on national team kits as early as this year's tournament in the US, Canada, and Mexico. Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin confirmed this early introduction is necessary to stockpile years of match-worn material before the 2031 product lines launch.
This means that whenever a player takes the pitch for the first time at the 2026 World Cup, their jersey will carry an extra detail.
