Tottenham Happy to Be Named Tottenham Again

  • Policy Reversal: Tottenham Hotspur has made a U-turn on its controversial naming rules, once again embracing being called 'Tottenham' after previously discouraging it.
  • Initial Naming Restriction: The club's initial restriction on using 'Tottenham' was codified in November 2024 with a new brand identity, explicitly instructing staff and partners to avoid the shortened name, a policy that escalated in February 2025 with requests to broadcasters.
  • Reconnecting with Heritage: The reversal aims to reconnect the club with its north London heritage, as the previous ban alienated supporters, and the club is now actively promoting slogans like 'THIS IS TOTTENHAM' and welcoming the change.

Tottenham Hotspur have performed a quiet U-turn on their strict naming rules and are once again embracing being called simply "Tottenham". As reported by The Athletic, the club has moved away from its controversial branding policy that actively discouraged the media and the public from using the shortened geographical name.

Tottenham Hotspur Make U-Turn on Banning the Name 'Tottenham'

The initial restriction was codified in November 2024, when the north London side rolled out a remastered brand identity developed with Studio Nomad. Alongside visual tweaks such as removing the curved club text from underneath the cockerel crest and reviving a classic monogram, the internal Brand Playbook explicitly dictated naming conventions.

It instructed staff and external partners to use "Tottenham Hotspur", "Tottenham Hotspur Football Club", or "THFC", going as far as to state: "Never refer to our Club as 'Tottenham', 'Tottenham Hotspur FC' or 'TH'."

Reconnecting With North London Heritage

That guidance escalated in February 2025, when the Premier League emailed international broadcasters on behalf of the club requesting that on-screen graphics and commentators avoid calling them "Tottenham", instead preferring "Tottenham Hotspur" as the primary name or "Spurs" as the only accepted abbreviation.

While the club had held internal preferences along those lines since 2011, putting a hard ban on the local name alienated many supporters who felt it detached the club from its surrounding community.

Over the past months, however, the club has actively leaned back into its roots. The shift has been visible across the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where large digital screens prominently feature the slogan "THIS IS TOTTENHAM", alongside club media projects such as the short film Tottenham 'Til I Die. The move re-anchors the club's pride in the north-east London neighborhood where it has played since its founding in 1882.

The return of the name was formally welcomed by supporters during a Fans Advisory Board meeting in late September 2026.

While official broadcast feeds and league graphics still routinely default to "Spurs" or the full club title, the club hierarchy no longer objects to being referred to by the town name that has defined their history for well over a century.
