Aston Villa 26-27 Home Kit "Becomes Black"
- Kit Transformation: Aston Villa's 26-27 home kit dramatically darkened to appear almost jet black during a fixture in Indonesia due to players' sweat.
- Cause of Color Shift: The striking color change is attributed to the interaction of high temperatures, the optical properties of claret dyes, and technical shirt materials, where moisture saturation alters light reflection, making the rich red hue appear near-black.
- Unprecedented Effect: This specific color change was exceptionally drastic, surpassing similar, less severe darkening effects observed in other modern football kits, such as Belgium's Euro 2024 kit.
During this weekend's fixture in Indonesia for the 26-27 season, supporters noticed a striking visual transformation in Aston Villa's home kit.
Heat, Pigment, and Material Interaction: Aston Villa 26-27 Kit Changes Colors Due to Sweat
As players put in high-intensity efforts, sweat-soaked areas across the chest and torso of the claret jersey darkened significantly, making sections of the shirt appear almost jet black on the pitch.
This dramatic color shift is caused by a combination of high temperatures, the optical properties of claret dyes, and technical shirt materials. Maroon and claret pigments are famously sensitive to moisture saturation. When liquid saturates the synthetic fibers, it alters how light reflects off the surface, drastically darkening the tone from a rich red hue to a deep, near-black shade.
Modern football kits utilize lightweight, sweat-wicking synthetic fabrics designed to draw moisture away from the body. In extreme heat, heavy perspiration rapidly fills the weave of these performance materials. While the fabric continues to function as intended for heat management, the interaction between heavy moisture absorption and dark red polyester naturally creates a distinct darkening effect across the shirt.
However, we have never seen such a big change of color - it was similar for Belgium's Euro 2024 kit, but not as drastically.
