Brazil Bans Betting Sponsors With Immediate Effect - Shirts Must Be Cleared by October 5
- Immediate Ban on Betting Sponsors: The Brazilian government has enacted an immediate, nationwide ban on fixed-odds sports betting and online casino sponsorships, effective September 25, 2026, requiring all related branding to be removed by October 5.
- Catastrophic Financial Blow to Série A Clubs: The ban delivers a catastrophic financial shock to Brasileirão clubs, as 14 of the 20 Série A teams rely on betting operators as primary sponsors, with estimated annual losses ranging from R$900 million to R$1.1 billion.
- Provisional Measure and Club Compliance: The decree is a Provisional Measure valid for up to 120 days requiring Congressional approval to become permanent, and Santos was the first club to comply by replacing its betting sponsor logo with a commemorative patch.
Brazilian football has been plunged into turmoil after the Brazilian federal government enacted an immediate nationwide ban on fixed-odds sports betting and online casino sponsorships. Enacted on September 25, 2026, through Provisional Measure (MP) 1.394/2026 signed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the decree strictly prohibits the operation, offering, advertising, and sponsoring of sports betting activities. Under the emergency regulations, all gambling branding and logos must be removed from team jerseys, pitchside advertising boards, broadcasts, and digital assets by October 5, 2026, before online platforms go completely dark on October 6.
Huge Blow for Série A Clubs
The sudden mandate delivers a catastrophic financial shock to the Brasileirão, where betting companies have become the dominant source of commercial income. A staggering 14 of the 20 clubs in Série A have betting operators as their primary front-of-shirt sponsors, headlined by marquee deals like Flamengo's partnership with Betano and Corinthians' contract with Esportes da Sorte. Analysts estimate the ban will wipe out between R$900 million and R$1.1 billion (around US$200 million) annually in direct sponsorship revenue.
While the Provisional Measure carries immediate legal force, its long-term permanence is not yet completely guaranteed. The decree is valid for up to 120 days, during which the Brazilian Congress must decide whether to formally vote it into permanent law or let it lapse.
Betting trade groups have already lodged emergency petitions with the Supreme Court to suspend the ban, but with the compliance deadline falling within days, Brazilian clubs are forced to tape over, replace, or strip the lucrative betting logos from their kits with immediate effect.
The first team to remove the betting sponsor logo from their kits is Santos. Instead of betting brand Novibet, the kit will showcase a special commemorative patch in honor of passionate Santos fan and influencer Naty Potira (Natalia Potirapora Martins da Conceicao), who passed away on September 26 following a prolonged fight with metastatic cervical cancer. Displaying an illustrated portrait accompanied by the words 'Eterna Potira', the crest honors a widespread fan initiative and spearheads the club's Outubro Rosa breast and cervical cancer awareness campaign.
