No More Adidas: Sunderland Announce Nike Kit Deal

Sunderland AFC, currently sitting in fourth place in League One, have announced Nike as their new kit supplier from next season, replacing Adidas.

The partnership is not managed by Nike directly but instead by its affiliate Just Sport Pro Club, which is based in Sunderland.

While it will commence on 1 June 2020, we don't know exactly for how long it will run or much the club will get from Just Sport Pro Club.

Sunderland previously was with Nike two times, including the brand's first-ever European football sponsorship in 1983. Nike also made Sunderland's kits between 2004 and 2004. Adidas has been producing the Sunderland shirts since 2012.

Although "bespoke designs" were teased, it's most likely that the Sunderland 2020-21 kits will be based on the current Nike teamwear range.

Sunderland AFC Chairman Stewart Donald said: “This is an incredibly exciting deal for the club, and I’m delighted to welcome Nike back to the SAFC family. Our colours and kit are steeped in proud tradition, and we look forward to showing supporters our bespoke designs ahead of the 2020-21 season.

“Nike’s presence is already woven into the fabric of our club, and indeed within sport around the globe, and they are renowned for innovation and excellence. We look forward to collaborating with them throughout what is sure to be a successful partnership.”

Duncan Malins, senior director for Nike TEAM added: “We are extremely excited and proud to be partnering up with Sunderland AFC again. Sunderland itself is an important location within Nike’s history in the UK, with offices still based within the city. We look forward to an amazing partnership with the club and delivering amazing product for the fans.

Mike Heslop, sales director for Just Sport Pro Club, said “We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with Sunderland AFC in what we hope will be a long and successful partnership. Being based in the North East, we are well aware of the rich history of the club and its passionate fan base. We are sure the fans will love the new Nike kits and training wear.”

Are you happy to see Nike return to supply its first-ever club in Europe.
