Closer Look: Why Premier League Teams Are Wearing Poppy On Kits - One Team With 'Different Flower' Design
If you have watched a Premier League match this weekend, you surely have noticed that the teams and managers were wearing poppy on the shirts. Most of you certainly know that this has been the case since several years - let us find out why while also taking a look at the 2020-2021 Poppy kits.
Premier League Teams Wear Poppy In Lead-Up To Remembrance Day On November 11 2020
The reason for English teams to wear a poppy this weekend is simply and the same as it has been in previous years. They wear it to remember those who fall in wars.
In fact, the poppy flower became a unifying symbol of remembrance and commemoration of the soldiers who gave up their lives and filled the war zones of Northern Europe while representing their country between 1914 and 1918.
Since 2012, each Premier League club have had poppies on their shirts during the month of November in the lead-up to Remembrance Day (November 11).
2020 Premier League Poppy Shirts
The 2020-21 Premier League poppy shirts come with the red poppy in the center. However, in contrast to a few years ago, all teams are wearing the same poppy design on their shirts in the Premier League. This has been the case since 2015.
The Poppy seen on the 2020-21 Premier League kits is the one part of the 2020 Poppy Appeal launched by the Royal British Legion.
Everton is wearing a custom stitched poppy
The only difference of the poppy between teams is that at least one team is wearing a stitched version without a white border (Everton), while other use heat-applied ones (e.g. Liverpool, Chelsea). A few clubs also had special inscriptions around the poppies.
The poppy design in the Scottish Premiership is different to the one used in the Premier League, in example.
Just as in previous years, the 2020-2021 Premier League Poppy Match-worn shirts are made available to purchase in an auction, with all proceeds going to the Royal British Legion.
