Umbro Will Sell Authentic Player Issue Football Shirts From Next Season

The 'Double Diamond' brand has already offered us a glimpse at their ideas for the next season by unveiling Gamba Osaka's 2021 football shirts a few days ago.

With it, we not only get a first look at a potential new template for the 2021-22 campaign with a subtle 'Double Diamond' appliaction to the sleeves since the Japanese club also revealed that they are selling different versions of their new home and away jerseys. To be specific, they offer authentic and replica football kits..

A short summary on the club's website states that authentic shirts have the same specifications as the uniforms worn by Gamba Osaka's players on the pitch (i.e. player issue jerseys). There will also be a replica version that has the same design as the authentic one but comes without the performance-enhancing features.

Umbro 2021-22 Authentic vs Replica Football Kits - Main Differences

  • Authentic version has a cooling base material, material of replica is sweat-absorbing and dries quick
  • Authentic version features heat-applied 'plastic' club logo, while replica has embroidered logos
  • Authentic version fits tighter, replica more spacious

The authentic version of the Gamba Osaka 2020 home and away jerseys retails at ¥26.400 (~ GBP 190), while the replica costs you ¥14.300 (~ GBP 100). We do not think that these prices will be the same for the European and American market. We rather expect replica shirts to cost around £65, whereas authentic ones will be valued at around £100.

National Team Crest Evolutions

Renowned football designer Emilio Sansolini (@EmilioSansolini) has published a comprehensive visual overview highlighting the evolution of national team crests around the world. Titled 'Then & Now', the graphics showcase dozens of international football federations, comparing their previous badges directly with their current modern redesigns.

The visual collection covers major footballing nations alongside smaller federations across all major continental confederations. High-profile rebrands featured in the comparison include France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Brazil, Mexico, and the United States, illustrating the widespread shift toward minimalist aesthetics, modernized heraldry, and sleeker digital styling over the past decade.

While many modern redesigns aim to create cleaner, more scalable digital logos, fan reactions to these visual shifts remain mixed. Minimalist updates for nations like Spain, Mexico, and South Korea have often sparked debate regarding traditional heritage versus modern branding, whereas updates for federations such as Iceland, Costa Rica, and Venezuela have generally received praise for introducing fresh identity concepts.
