Benfica Wore Last Season's Away Kit Against Ajax
Benfica wore their away kit from the 20-21 season in last night’s Champions League round of 16 match against Ajax.
Why Benfica Wore Old Kit vs Ajax
The photos below show Benfica in action on Tuesday night in their away shirt from the 20-21 season.
The Lisbon side took to the field wearing the simple black and silver design that was released in summer 2020 a for a very straightforward reason. As Ajax were the home side, they wore their famous red and white home kit. Benfica’s home kit is red and their away kit is white, which immediately ruled out those options.

The one remaining option was their black, grey and red third kit. The presence of red along with the light shade of grey used prominently on the front of the shirt may have been deemed to provide insufficient contrast with Ajax’s jersey, so the safer option of last season's black away kit was worn to avoid any risk of a kit clash.
They're not the only side to use an old kit this season, with Barcelona wearing their Seynera kit originally released for the 19-20 season, something they've done every year since it's release.

Schlotterbeck Deliberately Wears His Football Socks the Wrong Way Round
Borussia Dortmund and Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck has a very specific habit regarding his matchday attire. The centre-back deliberately wears his football socks the wrong way round - the back is on the front, and the front is on the back.
In 2025, the Borussia Dortmund & Germany center back once told SPORT1 that this was one of his unique habits.
