- League Play: AFS SAD will play in the 2023-2024 Liga Portugal 2, while UD Vilafranquense was relegated.
The new AFS SAD Home, Away and Third jerseys was released a couple of days ago. It is made by Adidas, with the help of distributor Desportiva.pt, features no main sponsor and will be worn in the 2023-2024 Liga Portugal 2.
Why are these kits the first in the club's history? Well, it's a new club! Let us explain.
First, in Portugal, clubs require a SAD (Sociedade Anónima Desportiva meaning Anonymous Sports Society) to play in professional divisions (that being the Liga Portugal divisions, the Primeira and Segunda Liga).
The name is spooky but essentially it allows the clubs to set up a type of company, in the form of a public limited company, to participate in the competitions. Usually, these entities, the club and SAD, work together in harmony to allow for a successful campaign each season but messy and controversial histories have happened:
- Belenenses had no choice but to break themselves from their SAD, leaving the first division in 2017-18 and the SAD formed a club, B-SAD, who took their place next season.
- B-SAD got relegated a few seasons back to the Segunda Liga and this season, to Liga 3, the third tier of Portuguese football. However, to aggregate back to a club, the B-SAD tried fusing back to a club, choosing Cova da Piedade to create Cova da Piedade SAD. However, the fusion has been recently refused by the authorities.
You can now understand that this model, despite some advantages, can create some controversial moves. In this case, a club in Liga Portugal 2, UD Vilafranquense SAD, lost its SAD that decided to invest in Desportivo das Aves to create the AFS SAD.
