The concern is completely understandable. Back at the 2022 World Cup, Denmark and Hummel released a set of tonal, monochrome kits. But when Denmark actually took to the pitch, a highly visible, full-color Danish flag was awkwardly heat-pressed onto the chest.

So, is the Nike Norway 2026 blackout kit destined for the same fate? We consulted the 2025 FIFA Equipment Regulations to find out.

Why Denmark Was Forced to Change in 2022

To understand what might happen to Norway, we have to look at why Denmark's tonal kit was altered.

Denmark's invisible logos were not just a design; Hummel explicitly marketed them as a political protest against the host nation, Qatar. Because of this public declaration, FIFA certainly stepped in.

Under FIFA's rules, any kit that includes a political statement is strictly forbidden. Furthermore, Annexe B, Article 5.7 of the rulebook gives FIFA the power to withdraw approval if the context or associated message of a kit design changes into something political. Because the "invisible logo" was the protest itself, FIFA essentially neutralized the protest by forcing a visible national flag onto the chest.

Why Norway’s 2026 Blackout Kit is Safe

We probably won't see the Norwegian flag that big on Norway's kit.

Unlike Denmark, Norway’s 2026 blackout away kit is purely an aesthetic choice by Nike and the Norwegian Football Federation. There is no political protest attached to the design.

Because there is no political angle, Norway’s kit is subject only to the standard FIFA uniform rules. Here is what the 2025 FIFA Equipment Regulations say:

• Flags are 100% Optional: According to Article 13.5.1, a team "may" display Team Identifiers on the chest. Article 13.5.1.5 specifically lists the National Flag as an option, but the language makes it clear that a flag is never mandatory. Teams are completely free to play without one.
• Blackout Crests Are Legal: There is absolutely no rule in the 115-page FIFA rulebook stating that a national team crest or manufacturer logo must highly contrast with the shirt.
• Numbers Must Contrast: The only strict visibility rule applies to player names and numbers. Article 7.2.2 dictates that names and numbers must "contrast sufficiently with the surrounding colour(s)" so that referees and broadcasters can see them. Norway have silver numbers for their blackout kit.

Our Verdict

Norway will NOT be forced to add a flag to their 2026 blackout away kit.
