Nike is set to officially bring back one of its most famous crossover designs, the Kobe 8 Protro "Mambacurial", releasing on September 19, 2026. First introduced in 2013 as a tribute to Kobe Bryant's lifelong passion for football, the sneaker drew direct inspiration from the vibrant 2013 Nike Mercurial Vapor IX football boot. Thirteen years after its original debut, the model returns under the modernized Protro banner, uniting basketball performance with iconic football heritage. Big thanks to House of Heat.

The shoe faithfully recreates the beloved colorway, featuring a bold gradient across the engineered mesh upper in Red Plum, Pink Flash, and Electric Green. Signature football details define the look, including the oversized forefoot Swoosh that mimics Mercurial boot branding, massive block-letter "NIKE" lettering across the medial flank, and a translucent neon green outsole. Modern Protro upgrades have been implemented beneath the surface to provide improved cushioning and traction.

A bizarre equipment failure occurred during Saturday's Scottish Premiership clash between Celtic and Falkirk, as young Celtic right-back Colby Donovan saw his Nike Mercurial Vapor boot completely snap in half mid-match.

The soleplate and midfoot structure had fractured cleanly across the center, leaving the toe part detached and dangling from the front half of the boot.

Luckily, Donovan escaped any foot or ankle injury from the incident and was able to swap into a fresh pair of boots to complete the match.

Drawing inspiration from the iconic 2013 crossover between the Mercurial Vapor 9 and Kobe 8, the boots feature a vivid pink, purple, and orange gradient upper complemented by volt accents and an iridescent soleplate. Also shown is a crisp white and teal colorway, set to serve as Nike's final regular on-pitch Mercurial pack of the calendar year with a scheduled release around December 2026 or January 2027. Rounding out the trio is the latest United Pack edition, which combines a light blue base with metallic silver heel graphics and bright orange accents along the Swoosh outline.
