Darmstadt Renames Stadium in Honor of Deceased Fan
Honoring the late Jonathan Heimes, a Darmstadt fan who died of cancer earlier this year, Bundesliga team Darmstadt and naming rights holder Merck today announced that its stadium would be known as "Jonathan-Heimes-Stadion am Böllenfalltor" throughout the 2016-17 season.
In addition, shirt sponsor Software AG has agreed to clear the chest of the Darmstadt kit in order to display the logo of "DUMUSSTKÄMPFEN", a foundation established by Heimes and tennis player Andrea Petkovic that raises support for the fight against cancer. The special jersey will be worn by Darmstadt 98 on the anniversary of Heimes' death in March 2017.
