AS Roma Announce Betway Training Kit Sponsorship Deal Despite Betting Ads Ban

AS Roma has announced a three-year deal with Betway who becomes Roma’s Exclusive Training Kit Partner up to and including the 2020-21 season. The deal comes by quite surprise as the Italian government banned professional sports clubs from from agreeing sponsorship deals with companies that operate in the gambling sector from 2019.

Kaitlyn Colligan, Director of Global Business Development and Commercial Operations at AS Roma said: “We’re delighted to announce Betway as a Main Global Partner and look forward to seeing their name on our training kits this season. Betway are a young and ambitious brand with global aspirations and we are excited about working together to offer our fans exclusive competitions, access and insight from behind the scenes at Trigoria.”

AS Roma Three-Year Betway Deal Only Valid Until June 2019 Because of New Law in Italy

The ban of the Italian government on betting sponsors will come into force on January 1, 2019. As of today, the Betway AS Roma sponsorship deal will only be allowed to run until run until the end of June 2019 (existing sponsorship deals will be allowed to run until the end of June 2019) – two years before Roma’s deal with Betway is due to expire.

Currently, more than half of Serie A’s 20 clubs have sponsorship deals with companies in the gambling sector. Serie A expressed “extreme worry” at the ban.

Betway CEO Anthony Werkman said: “We’re very excited to be partnering with a great club like AS Roma, in what is our first partnership in Italian football. Roma have a huge fan base and we hope this three-year-deal will give us some great exposure over the course of the next few seasons.”
