Schalke to Wear Special Kits to Celebrate Mining Tradition

Schalke will honor the mining tradition of its home region by wearing special kits in the Bundesliga home game against Leverkusen on December 19.

Instead of Gazprom's logo, all Schalke players will wear the names of different former collieries from the Gelsenkirchen region on their chest. The DFL (German Football League) has already granted a special permission.

Buy why? On the last Bundesliga home game of the year, Schalke will ceremoniously bid farewell to coal mining, with German president Steinmeier set to officially close the last open mine in the region.

Speaking to Bild, Schalke Marketing Director Alexander Jobst on BILD said: "Mining and the history of FC Schalke have a very close connection. The club would like to say goodbye to its fans and buddies and once again stand very closely together."

Interestingly, Dortmund have planned a very similar activity. On December 21 against Gladbach, the Dortmund team will also play in special jerseys. The inscription "Danke Kumpel" will then feature on the chest.
