Atlético Deny Puma Kit Deal
After news emerged last weekend about Atlético Madrid having agreed to move to Puma starting in the 2020-21 season, the club has now come out to deny the reports.
According to Spanish media reports, people close to the club have denied the Puma reports. Since those came from within Puma however, there's definitely truth to them and it might just be a move to safe face and to avoid confrontation with current sponsor Nike.
"There will be no change in the relation between Nike and Atletico, especially since the club's status was recently upped by the brand thanks to its sporting success and many fans around the world."
As mentioned before, even if there's a deal in place with Puma, there are many reasons for Atletico to deny it at the moment. It's also not uncommon for supplier deals to include clauses that allow a party to cut it short in exchange for a payment. This exact thing happened when Chelsea, under contract with Adidas for six more years, moved to Nike recently. Adidas then received a payment of more than $80m from the club / Nike.
