OFFICIAL: Three All-New Ligue 1 20-21 Fonts Released
Update: The release of the Nike Paris Saint-Germain 2020-2021 home and away kits gives us a look at the typeface PSG will use in the 2020-21 season. Paris SG opted for the font that provides a 3D effect.
Confirming the earlier leak as well as the designs revealed with Olympique Marseille's jersey launch, Ligue 1 today unveiled the full range of numbering to be used from the 2020-21 season.
Replacing the previous style, established in 2008, the new Ligue 1 font aims to offer a more modern look while also staying consistent with the overhauled visual identity of the league.
From the start of the 20-21 season, teams in France's top three divisions (Ligue 1, Ligue 2 and Championnat National) will have the choice of three different, league-designed fonts. Now we get the first look at one of the three new Ligue 1 2020-21 typefaces.
Ligue 1 2020 Kit Font
This picture shows all three styles that teams can use in the 2020-2021 season.
All three font choices are based on the same numerals shapes, which is more modern than the previous style while also featuring a versatility that is welcome.
As for the modifications made on each one of the designs, they are different border styles - one on the outside, one on the inside of the shapes and one that provides a 3D effect.
Teams are free to choose the style they desire and can even alternate between the home, away and third kits.
On the bottom of the new Ligue 1 2020-2021 typeface is the league's new emblem.
The player name lettering will be the same across all styles of the Ligue 1 20-21 font. The league has confirmed that the use of a border on names will be optional - unlike before. Should a team decide to use such a border, it will have to be of a different color than the letter base shape as well as color different from the shirt.
The league even supplied detailed usage instructions:
On players' jerseys, names must be used at a height of 6 cm. For long names, such as that of Lyonnais Reine-Adélaïde, it is possible to compress them to respect the width of the jersey. Similarly for short names, such as Glik, it is possible to increase the letter spacing for better camera visibility.
Numbers should have a height of 20 cm. On players' shorts, the numbers must be 10 cm high.
The Ligue 1 2020 font will be used from 2020-21 and likely at least for a few years.
