Is Tottenham's Strange-Colored Third Kit a Disadvantage?

Tottenham Hotspur unveiled their new 2023-2024 third kit last night, and the unusual color got people talking. But not only that - there can also be raised concerns about its visibility.

Is Nike's Tottenham 23-24 Third Kit Bad For Players?

The Nike Tottenham 23-24 third kit is mainly Taupe Haze, a color never used for football kits by Nike before. Instead, it was used for some Nike shoes.

In the relatively poor lighting of Fulham's iconic Craven Cottage stadium, it was certainly not perfect for the Tottenham players to see their teammates.

If Tottenham would actually change their kit, it would be not the first time that a football team have been forced to change their kit due to visibility issues.

In 1996, Manchester United famously changed their kit at half time in a match against Southampton. While the switch from grey to blue and white is well known, the reason behind it is less so.

According to Gary Neville, who played in the match, the decision to change was based on scientific research into vision and alertness. Sir Alex Ferguson had employed a vision specialist from Liverpool University, Gail Stephenson, who had been working with the team on eye and alertness exercises. She had advised Ferguson that the grey kit was not as visible in a crowded atmosphere as the other jerseys and therefore players would not pick it up as quickly.

While the kit change did not result in a win for United, they did manage to win the second half of the match. Ultimately, the team went on to win the Premier League title that season.

In 1996, Manchester United famously ditched their grey third kit at half-time against Southampton.

It seems unlikely that Tottenham will ditch their kit

It remains to be seen whether Tottenham will follow suit, but it seems rather unlikely as of today. The club have not yet commented on the issue, but it is likely that they will be monitoring the situation closely.

Do you think Tottenham will wear this kit again in floodlight conditions? Let us know in the comments below.
