Have Fifa Banned Manchester City From Wearing Different Colors for Kit Names & Numbers?

  • FIFA Regulation: FIFA rules stipulate that names and numbers on kits in their tournaments must be a single color, contrasting with the kit.
  • Manchester City Violation: Manchester City wore two-colored kit names and numbers in the Club World Cup semi-final and final despite the regulation.
  • UEFA vs. FIFA: UEFA allows differently colored names and numbers, unlike FIFA.

Fifa have apparently banned Manchester City from wearing their two-colored kit font in the 2023 Club World Cup final.

Fifa Forbid Differently Colored Names & Numbers

Differently colored names and numbers are in violation of the official Fifa equipment regulations. According to the regulations, numbers and names in Fifa tournaments must be of one single color. In the club World Cup, Manchester City wore all-white names and numbers to comply with the rule.

7.2.2: [All such Names and Numbers must] be of one single colour, which must contrast sufficiently with the surrounding colour(s) of the Playing Kit item (or of the Number Zone, where used]

However, a possible error by Fifa led to Manchester City wearing illegal differently-colored names and numbers in the semi-final for the away kit and in the final for the goalkeeper kit.

Erorr: Manchester City should not have been allowed to wear their two-colored away kit font

The rule of the single color is defined in 7.2.2 of the official Fifa Equipment regulations. The names and numbers must be of one single color, which must contrast sufficiently with the surrounding colors of the playing kit item to be clearly legible. Manchester City's playing kit in the semi-final and the keeper kit in the final did not meet this requirement.

UEFA allow differently colored names and numbers in their competitions.
