End of Arial Era in Süper Lig: Clubs Have Custom Kit Fonts for 26-27 Season
- Mandatory Arial Font Abolished: The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has ended the decade-long mandate requiring all Süper Lig clubs to use a generic Arial font for player names and numbers.
- New Fonts for 2026-27 Season: Although the rule was abolished in July 2025, clubs will implement their custom kit fonts starting with the 2026-27 season due to prior production timelines.
- Clubs Gaining Creative Freedom: Süper Lig clubs like Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş are embracing this change by developing bespoke fonts and, in some cases, new kit partnerships to reflect their unique brand identities.
For over a decade, Turkish football fans have voiced their frustration over a seemingly minor, yet highly impactful, detail on their team's kits: the typography. Since 2012, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) enforced a strict mandate requiring all clubs in the Süper Lig to use a standardized, generic Arial font for player names and numbers. While other major European leagues continually updated their visual identities with modern, bespoke typefaces, the Süper Lig remained stuck in a visual rut. However, after years of intense fan protests and social media campaigns under hashtags like #ArialOut, the "Arial era" is officially over.
The TFF formally abolished the mandatory use of the generic font in July 2025, granting clubs the creative freedom to select their own typography. While the ruling came too late for clubs to implement changes for the 2025-26 season - as kit designs and production runs had already been finalized months prior - the impact of this landmark decision is set to be fully realized in the upcoming 2026-27 campaign.
What to Expect in 2026-27
As teams prepare for the 2026-27 season, which kicks off in mid-August, anticipation is building around how clubs will utilize this newfound creative freedom.
- Fenerbahçe: The Istanbul giants were among the first to address the rule change. Following the TFF's announcement last year, Fenerbahçe released a statement acknowledging the fan feedback and explicitly stating that they were "evaluating this feedback to reflect it on our kits for the next season". The club has a bespoke font for their 2026-2027 Adidas kits
- Beşiktaş: The Black Eagles are entering a new era on multiple fronts. Not only will they debut a new font, but the 2026-27 season marks the beginning of their new kit partnership with Nike, having departed from Adidas.
- Galatasaray: While specific details regarding Galatasaray's font choices have yet to be officially revealed, the defending champions are certain to capitalize on the opportunity to have their kits with a bespoke design that reflects their iconic brand.
The retirement of the Arial font is a major victory for Turkish football culture. The generic Arial font was widely criticized by fans and feeling distinctly uninspired compared to the bespoke typography seen in the Premier League, La Liga, or Serie A. Now, even better for clubs, they have an own typeface.
