- Rafael Leão Takes Over Number 7: Rafael Leão has been assigned Portugal's iconic number 7 shirt for the UEFA Nations League fixture against Denmark following Cristiano Ronaldo's unexpected departure from the national team camp.
- UEFA Regulations Drove Reallocation: The number 7 shirt was reallocated due to UEFA Nations League rules requiring all 23 players in a matchday squad to be assigned consecutive numbers from 1 to 23 without any vacant slots.
- Future of the Iconic Shirt: While Cristiano Ronaldo made the number 7 a global brand over nearly two decades, it is likely that Leão will eventually become the permanent inheritor of this legendary shirt for Portugal.
In an unexpected development on international duty, Rafael Leão has taken over Portugal's iconic number 7 shirt for their UEFA Nations League fixture against Denmark. The reassignment occurred after long-time captain Cristiano Ronaldo abruptly departed the national team camp earlier in the week, leaving the iconic squad number vacant on the official matchday roster.
Portugal Forced to Reallocate Legendary No. 7 Shirt
While the switch immediately sparked intense debate across social media, the reallocation is primarily driven by administrative regulations rather than a permanent changing of the guard. Under UEFA Nations League rules, all 23 players included in a matchday squad must be assigned consecutive numbers from 1 to 23 with no vacant slots allowed. Leão, who had worn number 17 in Portugal's earlier 26-27 Nations League outings, took the number 7, while late addition Fábio Silva inherited Leão's vacated number 17.
Cristiano Ronaldo had worn the number 7 for the Seleção virtually uninterrupted since taking it over from Luís Figo, turning the digit into a global brand over nearly two decades.
It seems likely that Leão will take Cristiano Ronaldo's number 7 once Portugal's most famous shirt officially passes to the next generation.

The badge last appeared during 2024 Copa América. Since then, despite holding both Copa América and World Cup titles, Argentina consistently gave priority to the World Cup badge.
