Brazilian Clubs Forced to Remove Betting Sponsors From Kit: Here Is How They Respond
- Federal Ban on Betting Sponsors: Brazilian clubs were abruptly forced to remove betting sponsors from their kits due to a sudden enforcement of a federal decree banning the operation and advertising of betting companies, causing widespread chaos in the Brasileirão.
- Significant Commercial Impact: The ban had a major commercial impact as 14 of the 20 Série A clubs relied on gambling firms as their primary front-of-shirt sponsors, leaving them with contracts worth hundreds of millions of reais disrupted or terminated.
- Diverse Club Responses: Clubs responded in various ways, including securing short-term commercial replacements, pivoting to related non-gambling apps, promoting club membership programs or charity causes, playing with clean sponsorless shirts, or, in Flamengo's case, displaying a protest message against the ban.
Wednesday, October 14, 2026: Paladar Negro has created a nice infographic showing off how Brazilian clubs reacted to the ban on betting sponsors. Most clubs have removed the logos; Santos added a charity logo, Flamengo and Fluminense added a protest message, while some teams have new sponsors already (some in short-term deals only).
The sudden enforcement of a federal decree banning the operation and advertising of betting companies in Brazil caused unprecedented chaos across the Brasileirão, forcing clubs to rapidly rebrand or strip their kits ahead of Round 29. Big thanks to @mantosdofutebol.
With 14 of the 20 Série A clubs previously powered by gambling firms as their primary front-of-shirt sponsors, the league saw an immediate and wildly diverse visual overhaul across matchday shirts.
Brasileirão Clubs Forced to Remove Betting Sponsors From Shirts
Faced with a matter of days to cover the vacant chest real estate, several clubs turned to short-term commercial replacements.
Corinthians struck an emergency deal with personal finance AI platform Jota.ai for their match against Internacional before shifting the brand to the lower hem, while Inter themselves took to the field showcasing e-commerce giant Shopee.
Meanwhile, São Paulo and Fluminense adopted a clever corporate pivot: both clubs replaced Superbet with Superscore, a dedicated sports intelligence and real-time statistics app from the same parent group that operates free of odds or direct gambling promotions.
Other sides looked inward to fill the void, using prime shirt real estate to boost fan engagement and community causes.
Botafogo and Vasco da Gama both promoted their official club membership programs, proudly displaying Camisa 7 and Sócio Gigante across their chests, a tactic mirrored by Athletico-PR.
Santos, meanwhile, took a philanthropic angle by featuring the branding of Instituto Leão do Mar, promoting the club's social and environmental foundations.
The most controversial reaction came from Flamengo, who turned their famous red-and-black hoops into a direct protest platform. In partnership with industry associations contesting the government ban, Flamengo took to the pitch against Santos displaying the slogan "Proibir não é proteger" ("To prohibit is not to protect") directly across the chest.
At the other end of the spectrum, heavyweights including Palmeiras, Atlético-MG, Cruzeiro, Vitória, and Grêmio simply lined up with clean, sponsorless fronts.
Remo and Chapecoense elevated existing non-betting partners Banpará and Aurora into the spotlight, while Bahia, Coritiba, Mirassol, and Red Bull Bragantino required no changes after already entering the round without a gambling brand in the master spot.
The abrupt wipeout of betting sponsors leaves Brazilian football facing immense commercial challenges. With contracts worth hundreds of millions of reais annually put on ice or torn up, Série A clubs will spend the coming weeks pursuing sustainable commercial alternatives while waiting to see whether lawmakers amend or uphold the restrictions.
