Nike Boca Juniors Mash-Up Kit Leaked - Goes On Sale Over 2 Years After Planned Release
Update: Two and a half years after the end of Nike's twenty-three-year partnership with Boca Juniors, the mash-up jersey that never went on sale has resurfaced. It is available to buy from Pro-Direct Soccer, where it is listed as a "stadium third shirt".
Initially set for release in December 2019 before the Adidas switch, the mash-up shirt combined elements from various shirts from Nike's tenure with Boca, but never saw the light of day in the end. For it to reappear like this two and a half years later is definitely curious, even more so because it is from an official retailer like Pro-Direct rather than Ebay, where unreleased prototypes and deadstock gear can sometimes be found.
Have Pro-Direct been sitting on this since 2019, or did they recently manage to get their hands on a shipment of the jerseys? What do you think? Comment below.
Update: The Nike Boca Juniors mash-up shirt with which Nike was going to say goodbye to Boca will finally not being released, according to club sources. The idea was to release a final jersey before December 31, when Boca's partnership with Nike, who will be replaced by Adidas, ends.
Update: The Boca Juniors mash-up shirt has been leaked by Boca Juniors fan page "La mitad mas uno de Costa Rica" (also thanks to Todo Sobre Camisetas). Set to be released in December 20119, it will be Nike's goodbye to Boca as the club will join up with Adidas in 2020.
Nike has already released a mash-up jersey for FC Barcelona and Inter Milan.
Nike Boca Juniors Mash-Up Jersey
This is the Boca Juniors mash-up jersey by Nike.
The Nike Boca Juniors mash-up follows a similar approach as the mash-up kits from Inter Milan and FC Barcelona, combining parts of old Nike Boca jerseys.
What makes the Boca mash-up design even more bespoke and unique is that it is directly inspired by La Boca neighborhood where the club was founded. The famous neighborhood where La Bombonera is located will turn 150 in 2020 and, therefore, it has been decided to use a proposal where the colors and the distribution of the segments of each previous shirt refer to the famous Caminito alley and the “conventillos” characteristic of the neighborhood (info via Todo Sobre Camisetas).
Nike has been making Boca Juniors jerseys since 1996. The Swoosh has released pretty different renditions of the club's trademark design, especially in the early years of the partnership
The Nike Boca Juniors mash-up shirt will be the brand's last-ever for the Argentinian club. Adidas will return as kit maker from early 2020.
