Temporary Corner Flags & Other Things Raise Aesthetic Concerns Ahead of 2026 World Cup

  • Aesthetic Concerns with Goal Nets: Fans expressed frustration over the use of goal nets lacking traditional deep box structures during recent warm-up friendlies, drawing comparisons to older MLS aesthetics.
  • Functional Issues with Corner Flags: Temporary, weighted corner flags resting on the grass rather than being properly planted hindered players during matches, with referees preventing their removal for corner kicks.
  • Broadcasting Problems for Viewers: German television viewers experienced severe sun glare during a friendly due to main broadcast cameras being positioned to capture digital advertisements, compromising the viewing experience.

With the 2026 World Cup officially kicking off in less than a week, international teams are wrapping up their final warm-up friendlies across North America. However, while the focus should be on squad formations and tactics, a different kind of conversation has dominated social media this weekend. f you watched one of the games, you pobably also noticed that some things were different from usual.

The primary source of online frustration stems from the pitch equipment utilized during these recent matches on US soil. Fans noticed the use of goals lacking the traditional deep box structure, drawing unflattering comparisons to the aesthetics of early 2000s MLS matches. But, this, was only aesthetics.

In the Brazil vs Egypt friendly, they used heavy, weighted temporary corner flags resting on top of the grass rather than being properly planted into the ground. This hindered players, with some wanting getting them away for corner kicks - but the referee did not allow.

Broadcasting issues have also been a point of contention. During Germany’s recent friendly against the USA, German television viewers were forced to watch the entire match battling severe sun glare. This occurred because the main broadcast cameras were positioned on the opposite side of the stadium specifically to capture German-targeted digital advertisements on the LED boards, compromising the overall viewing experience in favor of commercial visibility.

Some lines were also not very straight.

While these visual missteps have caused a stir online, fans can rest easy knowing these issues are almost certainly isolated to these pre-tournament friendlies. Official FIFA World Cup matches operate under incredibly strict technical and broadcast regulations. When the real tournament begins next week across official, FIFA-approved host stadiums, we strongly expect to see traditional, deep-box goal nets, properly installed corner flags, and optimized camera placements that prioritize the global viewing experience.

Have you noticed any other strange visual quirks during the recent World Cup warm-up friendlies? Let us know in the comments below.

Adidas Teams Twinned by Product Code & Design

Update - Sunday, June 7, 2026: As spotted Indonesian jersey experts @Jerseyforum, Adidas teams with the same design also share the product. In particular, they do not have the usual Team + Shirt Type Name (e.g. FCB A 26 JSY), but are called Custom Licensed Jersey (CULIC26 JSY).

Templates are not as common as they were in the past, but smaller Adidas teams still do not have custom designs always. In the outgoing 25-26 season, teams such as Düsseldorf, Al Ahly, and Sparta Praha all used the same Locker Room design with custom colors.

USA Wear Special Rainbow Numbers Against Germany

The United States men's national soccer team wore special rainbow-colored namesets during their friendly match against Germany on June 6, 2026, in support of Pride Month. The unique multicolored design was applied exclusively to the names and numbers on the back of the players' jerseys, while the front of the kits retained their standard gray appearance.

The USA Women's Team also used the Pride numbers in the friendly match against 2027 Women's World Cup hosts Brazil in São Paulo where they were defeated 2-1.
