Why Germany Must Alter Their 1990 Away Remake Kit Against the Netherlands

Germany surprised the football world by announcing that they will wear their iconic 1990 away kit remake against the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League on September 24, marking Jürgen Klopp's debut as head coach. However, while fans can buy the exact 1990 Bringback reissue in stores, the version the players will wear on the pitch in Amsterdam will have to be noticeably modified due to UEFA Equipment Regulations.

The retail remake created by Adidas faithfully recreates the original 1990 design with continuous white Three Stripes running all the way down the sleeves to the cuffs. Under UEFA Equipment Regulations, however, every playing shirt must feature a designated "sleeve free zone" on both arms. This area is strictly reserved for official competition markings - such as the UEFA Nations League sleeve badge and the UEFA Foundation badge - and must be completely free of any manufacturer branding, team identification, or graphics.

Because of this rule, Adidas cannot use uninterrupted Three Stripes on the pitch. Just like with Italy's 125th anniversary kit in 2023, the German team version will see the Three Stripes shortened or broken at the shoulder to provide the mandatory clean space for tournament badges. In addition to the sleeve changes, the match-issue shirts will also need a front number on the chest and UEFA-compliant back lettering, making the on-pitch shirts unique collector's items compared to the standard retail drop.
