Could Have Been Iconic: When Sega Almost Sponsored Real Madrid

  • Sega's Ambitious Sponsorship Bid: Sega proposed a three-year, 1,100 million pesetas per season deal to Real Madrid, effectively doubling the club's existing sponsorship earnings, as part of a major European marketing push for their newly launched Dreamcast console.
  • Real Madrid's Revenue Goals: Real Madrid sought to significantly increase its commercial revenue, targeting an ambitious 1,000 million pesetas per season for their next sponsorship deal, a figure that Sega's offer substantially surpassed.
  • Deal's Collapse and Subsequent Sponsors: Despite advanced negotiations and close behind-the-scenes connections, the Sega sponsorship deal ultimately fell through, resulting in Real Madrid extending with Teka and later signing with Siemens Mobile.

What if Real Madrid had worn Sega across their chest at the turn of the millennium? A fascinating report from Spanish newspaper Marca, originally published on November 10, 1999, has resurfaced, revealing just how close the Japanese gaming giant came to taking over the front of Los Blancos' famous shirts. Big thanks to @cronicasRM for the heads-up.

Sega Almost Sponsored Real Madrid

At the time, Real Madrid were sponsored by German kitchen appliance manufacturer Teka, whose long-running contract paid roughly 500 million pesetas (around €3 million) annually and was set to expire on June 30, 2000.

Looking to significantly raise their commercial revenue, Madrid directors had set an ambitious target of 1,000 million pesetas per season for their next deal. Sega blew past that figure, presenting an offer of 1,100 million pesetas (approximately €6.6 million) per year on a three-year contract starting from the 00-01 season, effectively doubling the club's sponsorship earnings.

A Massive Push for the Dreamcast

The move was part of an aggressive European marketing blitz by Sega to promote their newly launched Dreamcast console. Around the same period, Sega invested heavily in European football, famously striking shirt deals with Arsenal, Sampdoria, and Saint-Étienne.

Marca even published mockups showing how the 98-00 adidas Real Madrid kits would look with the branding: the white home and blue away shirts featured the classic navy Sega wordmark, while the black-and-gold alternate kit sported the Dreamcast spiral logo, mirroring Arsenal's alternating home and away setup.

The connections ran deep behind the scenes as well. French striker Nicolas Anelka had just completed a high-profile move from Arsenal to Real Madrid in the summer of 1999, having already featured in Sega promotional campaigns in England.

Even more remarkably, José Ángel Sánchez, who has served as Real Madrid's director general and CEO for over two decades under Florentino Pérez, was working as a top executive at Sega Europe at the time of the negotiations before joining the Bernabéu hierarchy in 2000.

Despite advanced talks in London between club directors and Sega representatives, the deal never materialized. Real Madrid ultimately agreed a short extension with Teka through the 00-01 campaign before going sponsorless during their historic centenary 01-02 season and subsequently signing with Siemens Mobile in 2002.

While the Sega shirts never reached the Santiago Bernabéu pitch, the concept remains one of the greatest 'what-if' sponsor designs in football kit history.

What do you think if Sega had become the front-of-shirt sponsor for Real Madrid at the time? Comment below.
