Kenya's new flagship sports arena is rapidly nearing completion, and it is set to open with a spectacular fixture. Kenyan President William Ruto has officially announced that the 60,000-seater Raila Odinga International Stadium will be inaugurated on January 5, 2027, with a friendly between FC Bayern Munich and AFC Ajax. The event marks the German giants' first-ever appearance on Kenyan soil and serves as the ultimate rehearsal ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
Raila Odinga International Stadium
Located at Jamhuri Grounds along Ngong Road in Nairobi as part of the broader Talanta Sports City development, the Raila Odinga International Stadium represents a major evolution. Unlike the majority of large national stadiums across Africa, the venue has been purpose-built exclusively for football and rugby without an athletics track circling the pitch. This design choice brings the steep, tiered grandstands directly up to the touchlines, guaranteeing intimate viewing angles and an electrifying atmosphere for fans.
Engineered to meet stringent FIFA and CAF Category 4 regulations, the arena incorporates state-of-the-art facilities across every level. The playing surface features a top-tier GrassMaster hybrid pitch supported by cutting-edge sub-air drainage, while the stadium is fully wired for Video Assistant Referee (VAR) systems and goal-line technology. Overhead, a specialized computerized hydraulic tension-cable roof covers all spectator seating, while the arena's exterior facade stands 56 meters tall and proudly showcases oversized Kenyan Maasai shields integrated into its geometric steel cladding.
Premium hospitality has also been given unprecedented priority for an East African venue. The facility houses 52 luxury VIP skyboxes and executive suites designed with high-end wood paneling, private bar counters, and lounge seating overlooking the bowl. Alongside modern broadcast compounds and extensive press workrooms, the wider Talanta Sports City complex also features three auxiliary training pitches to support major international tournaments.
Constructed by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) following a groundbreaking ceremony in March 2024, the venue has reached roughly 94% completion as crews apply the final touches to exterior plazas and interior furnishings. Tickets for the high-profile Bayern Munich versus Ajax opening fixture go on sale on November 5, 2026, followed closely by the Nairobi leg of the HSBC SVNS rugby circuit later in January.
