4 World Cup Titles? Why Does Uruguay Have 4 Stars On Their Kit?
Update: The new Uruguay 2021 home and away kits for the Copa America were released this month. The home kit features four stars, while the away kit has none (reason unsure, possibly to fit the innovative style).
FIFA only acknowledges the 1924 and 1928 Olympics as world titles
The jersey of the Uruguayan national team features 4 stars above the badge, despite Uruguay having won just two World Cup titles. Let us find out why.
Uruguay won two World Cups (in 1930, the first FIFA World Cup ever held, and in 1950). Before that, they won two Olympic Gold Medals with their football team, in 1924 and 1928. FIFA acknowledges the 2 Olympic gold medals from 1924 and 1928 as World Titles.
Furthermore, FIFA only acknowledges the 1924 and 1928 Olympics as world titles because the Olympics before 1924 did not allow professionals to play and the Olympics after 1928 became U-23 like they are today.
The "unofficial" Olympics before 1924 were won by teams from Canada & Great Britain (one time respectively), Great Britain (two times) and Belgium (one time).
Old Uruguay badge
Many of you should have already known this. What is different this year is that the 4 stars are not integrated within the badge as it was the case in the 2014 World Cup and before. The stars are now above the crest (the logo was slightly updated ahead of the 2018 World Cup).
