Celtic 20-21 Cup Kit Font Revealed - Previously Used By Lyon, Shakthar & Others

When Adidas launched the new Celtic Football Club 2020-21 home kit in early July 2020, there was some controversy about the possible new Celtic FC kit font. Now with the Scottish club having played some friendlies and the Scottish Premiership having been started, we get a look at the actual Celtic FC typeface...

Celtic 2020-2021 Cup Kit Font - Agency FB Typeface

The Celtic 20-21 kit font has a narrow, edgy appearance, that does look unique at first glance. The Celtic 20-21 kit font, however, is nothing bespoke for the club but based on a well-known typeface.

As noted by our Brazilian follower Samarony Lima (@samaronylp), the Celtic 20-21 kit font is actually an official typeface from the 1990s - the Agency FB font.

ATF Agency Gothic was designed by M.F. Benton in 1932 as a single titling face. In 1990 David Berlow saw potential in the squared forms of the narrow, monotone capitals. He designed a lowercase and added a bold to produce Font Bureau Agency, an immediate popular hit. Sensing further possibilities, he worked with Tobias Frere-Jones and Jonathan Corum to expand Agency into a major series, offering five weights in five widths for text & display settings. The result is the Agency FB font.

Scottish Premiership The new Celtic Adidas Cup looks similar to the official Scottish Premiership typeface

In the Scottish Premiership, Celtic is using the league-wide font. The new Celtic FC 20-21 kit Cup font appears to be chosen to look similar to the official Scottish Premiership typeface, especially with the border style chosen by Celtic.

On the bottom of Celtic's Cup jersey font is the acronym CFC in the Agency FB style.

Celtic is not the first team to use the Agency FB typeface - the font style has been used by teams such as Lyon, Shakhtar Donetsk and some Umbro Brazilian clubs.

The Celtic 2020-21 jersey with the Cup kit font is not available to purchase.
