Why Manchester United Cannot Wear Their 26-27 Fourth Kit in the Premier League

  • Special Fourth Kit Release: Adidas is set to release a special fourth kit collection for Manchester United in the 26-27 season to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the club adopting their iconic red, white, and black colors, along with a tribute to their Newton Heath origins.
  • Premier League Kit Regulations: The Premier League's strict equipment regulations limit clubs to registering only three kit sets per campaign (a primary home, an alternative away, and a registered third kit), thus prohibiting the use of a fourth kit in official league fixtures.
  • Permitted Use of Fourth Kit: Manchester United will only be able to wear their 26-27 fourth kit on the pitch in cup competitions, such as the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, or in UEFA European competitions, subject to tournament approval.

Adidas is set to release a special fourth kit collection for Manchester United in the 26-27 season to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the club adopting their iconic red, white, and black colors in 1902, alongside a tribute to their Newton Heath origins. However, the Red Devils will not be allowed to wear the strip in Premier League matches.

Why Manchester United Cannot Wear Their 26-27 Fourth Kit in the Premier League

Premier League Kit Regulations Limit Clubs to Three Strips

The reason lies in the Premier League's strict equipment regulations. Under official league rules, clubs are permitted to register only three kit sets per campaign: a primary home strip, an alternative away strip, and a registered third kit. The Premier League handbook does not allow the registration or use of a fourth kit in official league fixtures, meaning fourth strips are effectively banned from Premier League games.

Clubs can have up to a maximum of two alternative shirts for outfield players

Because of this rule, Manchester United will only be able to wear their 26-27 fourth kit on the pitch in cup competitions, such as the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, or in UEFA European competitions, subject to tournament approval.

Meanwhile, clubs are allowed to debut the upcoming season's kit during the final league match of a campaign; maintaining a permanent fourth option throughout the Premier League season remains strictly prohibited.
