River Plate's Estadio Monumental Set for 101,000-Seat Expansion and Full Roof

  • Monumental's Capacity Expansion: River Plate's Estadio Monumental is undergoing an ambitious expansion project to increase its seating capacity to 101,000, which will make it South America's largest and the world's second-largest club stadium.
  • Advanced Architectural Design: The stadium's transformation, in collaboration with German firm SBP, includes a new 360-degree upper tier adding 16,000 seats and a comprehensive hybrid ring-cable roof, supported by exterior V-shaped steel columns.
  • Member Benefits and Future Hosting: The 16,000 new seats will be available to club members at no extra cost, with the $145 million redevelopment, featuring modern amenities, targeted for completion before the 2030 FIFA World Cup, where it is expected to host key matches.

River Plate's iconic home ground, the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires, is set to cement its status among the world's grandest football cathedrals. Following recent major renovations that removed the historic running track, lowered the pitch, and raised capacity to around 85,000, the Argentine giants have outlined an ambitious project to expand the venue to an astonishing 101,000 seats. Once realized, the Monumental will not only solidify its standing as South America's largest football ground, but also rank as the second-largest club stadium in world football behind only Barcelona's renovated Camp Nou.

The Evolution of South America's Largest Stadium

Developed in collaboration with renowned German engineering firm Schlaich Bergermann Partner (SBP), the transformation introduces a continuous 360-degree upper tier adding roughly 16,000 seats, alongside a comprehensive hybrid ring-cable roof covering all spectator stands. To preserve the original 1938 structure, the massive roof and upper ring will be supported entirely from the exterior via heavy-duty V-shaped steel columns anchored up to 30 meters underground.

Crucially for River Plate's dedicated fanbase, all 16,000 new seats are intended to be available to club members (socios) without additional charges beyond their regular membership dues.

Carrying an estimated investment of just around $145 million, the redevelopment also incorporates modern circulation towers, improved amenities, new video scoreboards, and VIP skywalk viewing areas. The expanded Estadio Monumental is targeted for completion ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, where the historic ground is slated to host key centenary tournament fixtures.
